Book Review and Radio Interview: The Last Icon: Tom Seaver and His Times by Steven Travers

I’ve been a huge Tom Seaver fan for most of my life so when I discovered that there was a new book out about his career I immediately snatched it up….yes, that’s correct my friends. Phil Naessens actually bought a book rather than waiting for the publisher or author so send him one for a review and an interview.

I don’t have any regrets whatsoever and neither will you.

The Last Icon: Tom Seaver and His Times is written by well known author Mr. Steven Travers and I must say he did a remarkable job writing this book. It isn’t easy to write a book about the life and career of a famous person even when they do cooperate and sadly Mr. Seaver, for whatever reason, refused to do so.

The book is a hit anyway!

Travers takes his reader on a fact filled journey of the life and career of an icon and does so with a free flowing writing style that easily hooks his reader. I had a difficult time putting this one down and I do believe you dear reader will have the same problem.

For me this book was a trip down memory lane and I found myself reliving past glory and experiencing the heartaches that came with being a Met fan during the Seaver era; for example, I remember when the Mets traded Seaver to Cincinatti in 1977….I cried for two days and while reliving this didn’t have the same effect I did find myself shedding a tear or two at what has to be the darkest day in New York Met history.

While this book will be a great read for any Seaver fan it’s a great resource for anyone who didn’t have the privelege of watching Tom Terrific pitch…and who knows you might become a fan of his as well and if you do you can thank Steven Travers for this!

The New York Mets 2012 Game Recap: Mets 6 Rockies 5

The Mets won a wild and woolly one yesterday against the Rockies six to five in eleven innings….Ike Davis got the game winnning RBI in the top of the eleventh and Ramon Ramirez collected his first save of the season.

Johan Santana pitched another no decision gem yesterday and left after six innings with a four run lead….it should’ve been enough for him to have collected his first win since 2010. Sadly it wasn’t. The usually dependable Tim Byrdak served up a biscuit and Todd Helten crushed it for a grand slam…..

Kirk Nieuwenhuis and Ruben Tejada each had three hits for the Mets….these two are really getting it done so far this year!

Josh Thole went yard for his first home run of 2012….

David Wright collected two more RBI’s……please sign him to a long term deal?????

It was a good series for the Mets….anytime you can win a series against the Rockies in Denver is a good thing and on Wednesday night my pal Rocky fan Reuben Mills will join me to flesh out this series….you won’t want to miss this show!

The New York Mets 2012 Game Recap: Mets 7 Rockies 5

Yesterday was Mets starting pitcher Dillon Gee’s birthday and he celebrated it in fine style by picking up his second win of the season against the Rockies….Gee struck out seven and only walked two Rockies hitters.

Late last night I decided to put Lucas Duda in the lineup on my fantasy baseball team and he responded with a tater and four RBI’s on the night….I wish the rest of my team would have done the same

Three more hits for Ruben Tejada…..he’s really getting it done so far this season.

Mike Baxter had another pinch hit….it’s a tough job but he seems to do this quite well.

David Wright and Daniel Murphy each added three hits of their own….our two through five hitters are doing fine….if Ike Davis ever gets going we’ll have our own version of murderer’s row

Johan Santana takes the hill tonight and hopefully I’ll be able to watch at least some of it!

The New York Mets 2012 Game Recap: Jets 9 Broncos 18

I woke up this morning hoping to watch a baseball game between the New York Mets and the Colorado Rockies. Instead I saw a score that more resembled a NFL game between the New York Jets and the Denver Broncos. In fact I think the two baseball teams probably had a higher score last night then the Jets/Broncos game last year.

It was really ugly if you are a Mets fan.

Mike Pelfrey’s replacement Chris Schwinden started and got smoked….welcome to the Big Leagues rookie As roughed up as he was he didn’t do as bad as veteran Manny Acosta who gave up seven runs and took the loss.

Bravo Manny!

Ruben Tejada and Scott Hairston each had four hits on the night for the Metropolitans….in fact Hairston hit for the cycle so there’s always a bright side to everything I suppose.

The New York Mets 2012 Game Recap: Mets 3 Marlins 2

The Mets swept the Marlins yesterdayat Citi Field by a score of three to two. After thirteen pitches pinch hitter Justin Turner walked with the bases loaded to end the dramatic come from behind victory.

These are the type of wins that make believers out of people.

Break out the dustpan the Marlins just got swept

Once again Jonathon Niese pitched extremely well and the bullpen came in and held off the fishes long enough for the ninth inning heroics to occur.

Kirk Nieuwenhuis is quickly making a name for himself both at the plate and in centerfield as well. I like what I’m seeing so far from him.

Sad news yesterday. Mike Pelfrey will be having Tommy John surgery and will be out for at least a year. I’m not his biggest fan but I didn’t want him to end his career with the Mets this way….I wish him all the best.

In the sixth inning of last nights ballgame with the Marlins, David Wright launched one into the seats of Citi Field and also put himself into the Met history books by becoming the brand new all-time Met RBI leader and put the final nail into the coffin in terms of what the Mets should do with their star third baseman.

You pick up that 2013 option right now and you sign this man to a long term deal. That’s what you do if you are the Wilpons.

R. A. Dickey pitched seven strong innings striking out seven Marlins while only walking one. His lone earned run came in the fifth when Marlins second baseman Omar Infante went yard…

Mike Baxter pinch hit for Scott Hairston and responded with a two out double that drove in two….this guy can hit its too bad there’s no place to play him.

Josh Thole extended his hitting streak to eight games….good for him!

Lucas Duda had a couple of hits and an RBI….

Bust out the broom and the dustpan….I feel a sweep coming on!
